Welcome to Corridor WoodCrafters

The Corridor WoodCrafters

Corridor Woodcrafters Club Meeting – November 3, 2016

We met Tom and Stacy Nehl’s shop. Stacy provided some delicious potato soup!

28 people attended including 4 visitors

Problems/Questions for club members input:

Joannie West asked about a high pitch humming she is experiencing with her lathe. It was suggested that she may be losing bevel and/ or try using a steady rest.

Chuck Graybill needed to make 25, 9” disks out of ½” nylon. He tried turning them on the lathe. Some suggested using a router particularly with a pattern bit.

Tom Nehl had some 1/8” “veneer” pieces that warped. Suggestions included wetting or steaming them and placing them under weights to flatten again.

A visitor Wolfgang brought in a piece of wood to see if we could help him identify it. Most concluded it looked like birch.

Wolfgang’s son, Alex wanted help staining old-growth fir with a dark stain. He was frustrated by blotching (common in fir). Suggestions ranged from wood conditioner to sanding sealer, to using an aniline dye such as Trans Tint. Another suggestion was to head to Klinger’s to get their expert opinion.

Upcoming: December Club Meeting Thursday Dec 1 at 6:30 at the Amazing Space building at the Indian Creek Nature Center 5300 Otis Road SE.

I’ll try to condense Mike Duss’s directions a little: From CR head east on Otis Road. There is a stop sign about 1 mile east of Cedar Valley at the intersection of Otis Rd and Otis Ave. Go left to stay on Otis Rd and Amazing Space will be approximately 3 miles on the left side of the road. It is a big new building set back from the road a bit.

Or take Mt Vernon Rd east to Bertram Rd and take a right (at Touch of Class Banquet Hall). Otis Rd is just after a 1-lane bridge. Turn right after crossing bridge and follow Otis Rd for 0.7 mi. Amazing Space will be right side of the road. It is a big new building set back from the road a bit.

From Highway 13/151, Turn west on Bertram Rd. Left onto Otis Rd for about 0.7 mi. Amazing Space will be right side of the road. It is a big new building set back from the road a bit.

Our Christmas Party will be Saturday December 10 at 11 am. We will again be having it at Antioch Christian Church 7215 Cottage Grove Pkwy, Marion. Dinner will start at noon. We will be providing the Ham and Chicken. Bring your own table service and a dish to share.  There will also be a show and tell.
